Personalised Training in 2023: Empowering Employees in a Diverse Workplace

Recognising and responding to our employees’ varied learning methods, motivations, and experiences has become critical in our ever-changing, diverse workplaces. The issue we must address is, “How effectively are we tailoring our training methodologies to meet the specific needs of each individual?” 👤

Bill Gates, Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist, wisely stated, “As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others.” 👏 This highlights our critical role in empowering our teams with customised training.

Get to Know Your Employees.

The path to tailored training begins with a better understanding of our team members. We need to explore their motivations, obstacles, strengths, preferred learning styles, and professional goals. These vital insights can be obtained through psychometric testing (a method used to measure individuals’ mental capabilities and behavioural style through standardised tasks or questions), feedback questionnaires, and one-on-one interviews.

Leverage Technology.

Utilising technology can greatly assist us in providing tailored learning. AI-powered online learning platforms can customise learning paths according to every individual’s needs and interests. Based on a Deloitte analysis, digital learning tools are highly effective in improving individualised learning experiences since they adjust to learners’ pace and style*.

Concentrate on Relevance.

Training must be relevant, relatable, and applicable. We boost engagement and ensure that lessons learned are immediately applicable by integrating training with real-world events or difficulties that employees confront in their roles.

Flexibility is essential.

Our training approach should be based on adaptability and flexibility. As our employees’ needs and demands change, so should our strategy. A McKinsey report emphasises the significance of learning agility, arguing that firms that embrace this quality are better positioned to flourish in today’s business environment.

Encourage a Growth Mindset.

As Peter Drucker so eloquently emphasises the importance of continuous learning: “We now accept the fact that learning is a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change. And the most pressing task is to teach people how to learn.” Inspiring a growth mindset within our employees positions training as a continuous journey, not a destination.

Organisations that excel at personalising training do more than just instruct; they also empower. Recognising and catering to each employee’s unique needs and skills builds a culture that promotes growth, inclusivity, and, eventually, success.

So, fellow leaders and managers, pause for a moment to consider whether we are providing our staff with the customised training they require to genuinely prosper. If not, it’s time to rethink our approaches! ⏱️
